The Grammys: Are They Still Relevant? (Discussion)

Now here’s something to chew over. The Grammys have been a longstanding tradition in the music industry. Proclaiming to celebrate and promote musicians and music all over the globe, their mission is an admirable one. But when looking carefully at the event that takes place once a year, one will surely conclude that the mission statement has little to no actual bearing on reality. For each year the Grammys seem to be more focused on celebrating sales figures than actual good music.

The other big thing this article addresses is the lack of diversity. The organisation behind the Grammy Award ceremony likes to think of itself as this big global conglomerate that tries and succeeds in bringing music from every corner of the world to the forefront; making people aware of artists and projects. However, the truth of the matter is that the Grammys are dominated by American recording artists. With only a small percentage reserved for non-American artists and projects (usually British acts). The rest of the world however, is royally fucked when it comes to receiving a little shine on awards night.

What are your thoughts on the matter? Do you feel that the Grammys are a rather one-sided reflection of the real music industry? Or do you feel that their rooster offers a fairly unbiased look at modern music? Moreover, do you feel the Grammys are still relevant in this day and age?

Seriously an archaic celebration of what music means to people who have nothing to do with contemporary music. There is nothing to be gained from the Grammys any longer, not if one is into nation building...

Don't know why everyone is acting as if the Grammys define our experience of music. This has never been and will never be more than just another celebrity award show. For music credibility seek elsewhere.

The Grammys are a joke. Have been for years. It comparable to the Oscars. Any filmmaker worth a damn would rather receive a Palm D'Or than an Academy Award. The Palm D'or represents an actual appreciation of the craftsmanship that goes into the making of a film. An Oscar is nothing more than a statue that goes to the most popular film that stays within the conventions of Hollywood filmmaking. Anything to extreme of thought-provoking is almost immediately out of the running. The same goes for the Grammys, it's a celebration of mediocrity.

The Grammys really are a joke. If the winners have a problem with winning, there is truly something awry:
